Kunming Botanical Garden (KBG) was established in 1938. It is affiliated to Kunming Institute of Botany under Chinese Academy of Sciences. It has an area of 44 hectares. The Garden is a comprehensive institution with the main task of ex-situ conserving and sustainable utilizing the rare and endangered plants, endemic taxa, and economically important plant species in South Hengduan mountain range and in the Yunnan Plateau. Up to now, some 5000 plant species and cultivars have been preserved in 13 specialized gardens and the several sections. KBG has become an important research base on conserving and exploring the wild plant resources in Southwest China. The garden is also playing an important role in public education and tourism, and it opens all the year around with annual visitors of ca.500, 000. It can be hoped that KBG will be ranked as one of the most important international botanic gardens, with the strong bases on researches of plant sciences.
