Over the past four years we have seen an unprecedented seed collecting effort carried out by the GBOWS team and their network of collaborators throughout the country. The total target of 4,000 species and 30,000 accessions of seeds that they set for the first five years was extremely challenging. That they have achieved this target is extraordinary. This rate of collection has not been matched by any of our other partner institutions in 50 countries. In addition, the number of accessions they have collected (30,000) represents a duplication effort of 7.5 collections per species, which is much higher than our own average (2.5) and well beyond the minimum of 5 collections per species that we recommend.
