Cover Story:
Davidia involucrata, also known as dove tree, is an endemic “living fossil” plant in China. However, the factors driving the evolution and maintenance of intraspecific lineages in this endangered species remain poorly understood. Based on new resequencing data, Ren et al. identified three distinct local lineages within this species (including one cryptic lineage) and observed frequent hybridization events among the three lineages. These will help develop the conservation plans and enhance our understanding of the evolutionary history of this species and other endangered species with similar histories.
