INTRODUCTION:

Global environmental problems and fuel crises have been promoting public attentions on development of biotechnological process and alternative sources for the production of fuels and chemicals. There is broad consensus that Industrial Biotechnology will play a significant role in sustainable chemistry, renewable energy, detergent, textile, food and feed industries. The recent financial crisis has provided even more incentive to boost national green growth initiatives and policies, whereas industrial biotechnology might underpin green growth and innovation worldwide. This is especially true in the developing countries where significant activity is taking place in the field of industrial biotechnology.

The objective of this symposium is to review the most recent progress in the area of industrial biotechnology in developing countries. The symposium will provide a good opportunity for researches from the developing countries to exchange ideas, to share experiences, and to promote international collaboration to accelerate the commercialization of new products or new technologies. To achieve this, discussion will be focused on four major areas:

       (1) biorefinery of fuels and chemicals

       (2) production of bulk fermentation products

       (3) biocatalysis and biotransformation

       (4) development of novel bio-based processes.

     (5) development of new emerging disciplines, such as industrial systems biology and industrial synthetic biology
