An Asian regional conference on conservation of biodiversity will be held in the City from Aug 7 to Aug 10. The three-day event will deliberate on the causes leading to loss of biodiversity and the latest advances in the conservation science.
Titled ‘Biodiversity Asia 2012: Science, Policy and Governance,’ the conference will be attended by about 200 scientists and policy-makers in addition to students from 25 countries. The event will feature updates on conservation research in Asia through lectures, symposia and poster sessions. The conference, to be held at the JN Tata Auditorium at IISc campus, has been organised by the Ashoka Trust For Ecology and The Environment, with the support of the Indian Institute of Science and other organisations.
Second such event
Sponsored chiefly by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and the National Biodiversity Authority, the conference is the second such regional meet to be convened by the Society for Conservation Biology. It will be a prelude to the 11th conference of parties, of the convention on Biological Diversity, due to be held in Hyderabad in October. Meetu Desai of the Ashoka Trust said that the key speakers include Prof Madhav Gadgil, former professor of IISc; Dr David Orr and Paul Sears of Oberlin College, USA, and Dr JianchuXu of Kunming Institute of Botany — among others.
