The 7th International Pant Tissue Culture & Biotechnology Conference was held from March 1 - 3, 2014 in University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was organized by Bangladesh Association for Plant Tissue Culture & Biotechnology (BAPTC&B), in collaboration with Department of Botany, University of Dhaka. The theme of the conference is “Biotechnology and Biosafety for Human Welfare”. Total of 150 delegates from Bangladesh, China, Germany, India, Japan, Pakistan, and USA attend this conference. Prof. Dr. GAO Lianming , the deputy director of Key Laboratory for Plant Diversity and Biogeography of East Asia, Kunming Institute of Botany, attended the International conference.
The Inaugural Ceremony was held in the morning of 1st March at Nabab Nowab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka. There are 60 speakers for presentation in the six scientific sessions of the conference. Six international scientists were invited to make plenary and keynote speech in the conference. Prof. GAO Lianming presented his work entitled “DNA Barcoding of Two Taxonomically Difficult Woody Genera of Taxus and Rhododendron” as keynote speaker in the Session on Application of Biotechnology for Biodiversity Conservation on March 2. In the morning of March 2, Dr. Gao chaired the session III: Molecular Markers in Crop Improvement with co-chairmen Prof. Md. Al-Amin from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute.
During his invitation, Prof. Gao also visited the Cytogenetics and Biotechnology Lab of Department of Botany. He discussed the possibility of collaboration on Taxonomy, DNA barcoding, Biodiversity conservation, Biotechnology transformation and training between Kunming Institute of Botany and University of Dhaka in future with Profs. Sk. Shamimul Alam, M. Imdadul Hoque and Dd. Oliur Rahman. Some consensus on collaboration was made between two sides.
