Germplasm Bank of Wild Species in Southwest China Put into Operation Formally

The year of 2008 is the first year for Germplasm Bank of Wild Species in Southwest China (abbreviated as Germplasm Bank hereinafter) to be put into use formally. Relying on efforts of the entire staff and supports from all cooperation organization, the seed-preservation facilities were put into use after trial use. To date, over 27,000 pieces of wild plant seeds of over 4,000 varieties of about 150 families have been gathered and preserved in drying room, among which 162 pieces of seeds were preserved in freeze-drying refrigerator according to international advanced norms. To celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the foundation of KIB, the institute held the Opening Ceremony of the Germplasm Bank and Backup Preservation of British Seeds, through which, 204 pieces of seeds from Royal Botanic Gardens Kew have been preserved formally, marking the standardization of collecting, classification and preservation of germplasm resources has been completed and recognized by international counterparts.

Meanwhile, KIB managed to build up public platform of large-sized apparatuses for genomics and set up the 'Research Center of Plant Germplasm Resources and Genomics'. Two of the five introducing talents were selected into the 'Hundred-Talents Prior-Support Program' and another two were selected into 'Hundred-Talents Program', one was chosen as the first High-end S&T Talents of Yunnan, suggesting the Germplasm Bank has made initial progress in terms of scientific research as well as construction of platform and talents.
