New Progress in the Total Synthesis of Natural Products

Conquering complex natural products by total synthesis has always been a symbol of the advancement of organic chemistry. Total synthesis of challenging and complex natural products is also recognized as one of the toughest fields in the physical science. At present, Chinese chemists still lag far behind many of competitors from other developed countries in total synthesis of natural products. There also had been no systematic studies of the total synthesis in KIB. As of July 2008, Professor Yang Yurong’s laboratory is aiming at total synthesis of some structurally complex and biologically active natural product in KIB. After one year of great efforts, this laboratory has made progress in the total synthesis of the Lycopodium alkaloids through development of a general synthetic strategy, three alkaloids including (-)-8-deoxyserratinine, (+)-lycoflexine and (+)-fawcettimine synthesized successfully. Two of which are achieved for the first time. Additionally, Yang and co-workers first reported their synthetic studies on lycojapodine A recently in top journal J.Org.Chem.
